VOLUNTEERING

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is funded by the National Senior Service Corps (Senior Corps) and is sponsored locally by the Caddo Council on Aging, Inc.

FGP is a federal agency which promotes volunteerism.  Started in 1965, the local FGP has been in existence since 1980.

The FGP is a part-time service program along with: RSVP & Senior Companion.

Senior Corp is administered by the Corporation for National & Community Service; a federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering   The FGP offers seniors, ages 55 and older, opportunities to serve as mentors: tutors and caregivers for children and youth with special needs.

Louisiana FGP volunteers serve in many community organization across the state, in public and private schools, hospitals, youth centers, shelter homes, daycare centers, head start programs and state development programs.

FGP volunteers offer emotional support to children who have been abused and neglected, mentor troubled teenage and young mothers, and care for premature infants and children with physical disabilities. In the process, our FGP volunteers strengthen the community by providing youth services that the many local budgets cannot afford and by building bridges across generations.

FGP is administered at the local level by community service organizations, with 90% funding support by the federal government.
